The Montessori Philosophy encourages children to learn by doing.  To integrate in the environment a way to touch, hear, see and smell (in some cases) how what we count, read, and study  makes sense as part of the whole experience of being.  The learning is so much deeper when all the senses are integrated, when the lesson is about real life experiences, when the child's enthusiasm and wonder are present, and rote memorization is not needed.
